Total Weddings!Planning your Wedding - Children and Weddings!
Including or allowing children to attend your wedding is a simple decision for some but a difficult choice for others. If you are unsure if you would like to allow children at your wedding then perhaps the answer is already in mind, however before you decide for sure it may be wise to consider how many guests have children and what age you consider children to be (typically children under 12 years of age). Remember this day/night is about you and your partner and you do not need to feel guilty if you choose not to allow children to attend. If you do make such a choice, more often than not, your guests will understand and may even welcome a night off from parenting, however to ensure that you do your best not to surprise or offend anyone with such a decision you should be clear about it from the beginning with all of your guests. You can include a message on the invitations that make your guests aware that children are not welcome, although it may help to be a little creative in the message, for example; You could word it in a way that explains that you wish for a pleasurable and relaxing evening for all of your guests and try to include something like - "we politely ask" or "with respect, we ask that no children attend the wedding". Important note: Regardless of your choice, it is difficult to request newborns do not attend. Many mothers are not comfortable leaving their newborn child for many reasons. If a mother or father is expected to attend with a newborn it is likely that they will be respectful of other guests, however you can assist them by ensuring that they have a table that is pram friendly and close to an exit should they need to duck out to calm their baby. Another option may be to include children at the ceremony but not at the reception (or visa-versa), although this may be difficult as the parents would need to make arrangements to have the children collected or dropped off. If you do choose to allow children to attend, their are many ways to assist in ensuring a successful and pleasurable evening is had by all. Children need entertainment. It is very unlikely that a child will sit through a ceremony and the reception without becoming "bored" so we have listed some handy tips below; - You could try having a separate table for the children, which could include puzzles, drawing paper and pencils, and other age appropriate items. - Include a children menu - If at all possible you could have a DVD player set up in a different room or area where the children (whilst supervised) can watch movies or play video games - If you have the budget, you may consider hiring child care or someone qualified to watch and entertain the children with activities - You may consider children's entertainment such as a magician or clown and face painting Remember, whatever your choice, be sure that it is the right choice for you and your overall enjoyment. With the right approach, your guests will understand either way.
